The Shadow Journal
A six-week shadow work journal where your writing adds up. Log one reaction a day in about two minutes, read the week back, and finish with a map of what sets you off and what it protects.
What most shadow work journals miss
Most shadow work journals hand you hundreds of prompts and stop there. You answer them, and nothing adds up. Reviews of the best-sellers say the same things: no safety net, no room to write, prompts that repeat, and big claims about what the practice does. This one does less and makes it count.

How it works
- Before You Start and The Agreement. Stop signals, a 20-minute rule, and a signed opening page.
- 42 day pages. One reaction that was bigger than the moment: what happened, where you felt it, what it was protecting, and a score from 1 to 5 for "owned it, did not act it out". One optional prompt a day.
- Six weekly read-backs. Count the week from the page, not from memory, and write the pattern in one sentence.
- The Pattern Map and The Integration Page. Your top three patterns, each with an if-then plan you can run in under a minute.
- Two reference pages. What shadow work is and is not, and how to read a reaction, with grounding steps.
The six weeks
The Mirror · Envy and Admiration · Anger and the Line · The House Rules (gently) · The Golden Shadow · Putting It Together.
What it is built on
Studied methods, stated with their limits: naming a feeling (affect labelling, Lieberman and colleagues, 2007), stepping back to a third-person view (Kross and Ayduk, 2011), expressive writing, which shows small average effects (Frattaroli, 2006), and if-then plans (Gollwitzer and Sheeran, 2006).

Questions
Is this shadow work journal safe to do on my own?
It is built for everyday reactions (irritation, envy, defensiveness, the praise you brush off), not trauma work. It opens with a Before You Start page: stop signals, a 20-minute limit, a settle check on every day page and grounding steps. If writing brings up trauma or a low mood that lasts, stop and speak to your GP. It is a self-help record, not therapy.
How long does each day take?
About two minutes for the reaction log. The optional prompt is extra, on the same page, when you have the time.
Is there a digital version for GoodNotes?
Yes. The digital edition has a tappable contents page and 42 day buttons, for GoodNotes, Notability and similar apps. See it on Etsy.
Does it use Carl Jung quotes?
No. Jung's writing is still in copyright, and many "Jung quotes" online are misattributed. Every quotation in the journal is verified public domain.
