The Reading Journal
A 12-week reading journal that builds the habit rather than just listing books. Pick one reading slot, write one line a day, and after twelve weeks the record shows whether reading has become part of your day.
Why minutes, not books
Most reading journals are book-review templates: they are satisfying once you are already reading, and empty when you are not. This one counts minutes at one fixed time of day you choose in advance, your reading slot. Ten minutes kept every day beats sixty you skip. The book records are still there for everything you finish.

How it works
- The Reading Agreement. A signed opening page: where you are now, your daily target in minutes, and your reading slot written as an if-then plan.
- 12 week pages. Seven lines each: minutes, pages, which book, when and where, and how absorbed you were from 1 to 5. A weekly score for "kept my reading slot".
- Three monthly checkpoints, The Curve and The Verdict. Twelve weeks of minutes on one chart, then the record read back.
- The library. A finished-books ledger, a to-read list and 16 book records.
- Two reference pages. How a reading habit forms, and what to do when you stall. A worked week shows exactly how to fill it in.
What it is built on
If-then plans, which help people act on intentions (Gollwitzer, 1999; Gollwitzer and Sheeran, 2006), and research on how long habits take to form: a median of 66 days, with wide variation (Lally and colleagues, 2010).

Questions
Does it count books or minutes?
Minutes, at one reading slot you choose in advance. Books finished go in the 16 book records and the finished ledger, but the daily line is minutes and pages, because that is the part you control.
Can I start any time?
Yes. It is undated: start on any day. A missed day costs nothing; the only rule is never to miss two in a row. Audiobooks count if they keep the habit going.
Is there a digital version for GoodNotes?
Yes. The digital edition has a tap-to-jump contents page with buttons for all 12 weeks and 16 book records, for GoodNotes, Notability and similar apps.
How long before reading becomes a habit?
It varies. In one study of new daily habits, the median time to automatic was 66 days, with a range of 18 to 254 (Lally and colleagues, 2010). Twelve weeks gives you 84 days of record to see where you are.
